I didn’t enter (I already have 2 copies of Mark of the Demon), but I would like to share my sharing story.

Cory Doctorow releases his books under a creative commons license. He offers downloads for free on his website. If you like it, he says, buy it and then give it away. Piracy is not his problem, obscurity is.

When “Little Brother” came out, I downloaded it, and we loved it. We bought three copies (in hardback) and gave them all away (one to Julie’s dad to read while he was recovering from being lost at sea, and the other two to school libraries).

That is a successful sharing story.

All this came about because of the ethics of sharing ebooks. My take on that is that I’m perfectly willing to share an ebook with someone that I’d share a p-book with. The format of a book shouldn’t change what I do with it. I’ll be damned if I buy a second copy of a book for Julie to read.

And while I’m on that subject, I’d like to mention that I immediately remove DRM from any book I buy. Yes, I know that’s “wrong”, but I want to be able to read the book that way I like to read. Specifically, with Stanza on my iphone. Nobody tells me how or where I can read a paperback (”By opening the cover to this book, you agree to read only sitting in an upright position in a well-lit area free of distractions.”).

Does anyone actually read that way, Paul?

And how does bathtub reading work with e-books?
